Noun.  An amphidromous fish, the ''ayu'' of East Asia, the only member of its genus, ''Plecoglossus altivelis'', family ''Plecoglossidae'', named and prized for its sweet-tasting flesh, especially in Japan. It is a game fish and is also subject to extensive aquaculture.
