mongoose

Noun.  Carnivores of the family Herpestidae. Various species range in size from small rats to large cats. Species such as the Indian mongoose are famed as predators of venomous snakes, but in fact the habits of mongooses vary. Most mongooses are generalist predators that will eat almost anything that they can overpower, ranging from insects and scorpions to rats.
