Canadian raising

Noun.  (linguistics) The phenomenon in some dialects of English, especially (w, Canadian English) , in which (IPAchar, /aɪ/) is realized as (IPAchar, [ʌɪ]) and/or (IPAchar, /aʊ/) is realized as (IPAchar, [ʌʊ]) or (IPAchar, [ɛʊ]) before unvoiced consonants.
